Emotions in the Substrate
Feelings as the felt telemetry of the coherence-match economy — every major boundary in the brain-body system reporting the level, the gradient, and the forecast of its own match. The bilateral seam, the amygdala’s fast alarm, and the default-mode network’s self-vector form the triad of drivers; the vagal body is the gauge face they are read from. Anxiety as a forecast of match loss, grief as the staged unwrapping of a deep map, awe as the vector discovering it is longer than it was, ecstasy as the ledger paid down at once — the emotional landscape drawn as the state space of the boundary economy
What is a feeling, physically?
Affective science has spent a century circling that question without an agreed answer to the part that matters most: what quantity a feeling is a reading of. William James and Carl Lange said the feeling is the perception of the body’s own state — you do not tremble because you are afraid, you feel afraid because you tremble. Walter Cannon objected that the viscera are too slow and too coarse to individuate the emotions. The appraisal tradition put the content in cognition; Paul Ekman put a small basic set in evolved facial programs; Lisa Feldman Barrett’s constructionist account dissolved the basic set into two measured dimensions — valence and arousal, the “core affect” every study recovers — plus learned concepts that carve that plane into named feelings. Antonio Damasio’s somatic markers brought the body back as the substrate of value. Each of these owns real data. None of them says what the two dimensions every laboratory keeps finding are dimensions of.
The framework’s answer completes the sentence the previous chapter ended on. The Mind section’s claim is that cognition is a coherence-match economy — long vectors built, completed, and passed across coupled boundaries, each boundary pricing its mismatch as stored energy, the whole system sliding between the lock and anti-lock poles under the DMN’s regulation. An economy that large, that expensive, and that easy to break does not run open-loop. It is monitored. Emotion is the monitoring: the felt readout of the coherence-match economy — not the content of the matches but their state, reported boundary by boundary, as three numbers each: the level of the match, the gradient of the match, and the forecast of the match. A feeling is not the engine. It is the instrument panel — and the reason feelings are so compelling, so impossible to argue with, is that they are reports of real energy at real boundaries, in the one currency the organism cannot afford to ignore.
This chapter is one of the section’s most interpretive, and it says so up front, the way language and music do. What keeps it honest is that the reading is not free-floating: every gauge it names is a boundary the section has already built and priced, and the predictions at the end bite on data that mostly exists.
The Gauge, Not the Engine
Start with the two dimensions the data will not let go of. Ask people to rate how they feel, in any language, in any culture, under any instruction, and the ratings collapse onto Russell’s circumplex: a plane with valence (pleasant–unpleasant) on one axis and arousal (activated–deactivated) on the other, with the named emotions arranged around it. Barrett’s point is that this core affect is the irreducible part — always present, always changing, the raw feed the emotion concepts are laid over. The framework’s addition is that the two axes are not psychological primitives that happen to exist. They are the two quantities a boundary economy has to report:
Valence is the sign of the match’s motion. A match that is rising — coordinates coming into register, a boundary relaxing toward its matched limit, a prediction settling — feels good, and a match that is decaying — coordinates slipping, a boundary’s \Delta v climbing, stored energy accumulating — feels bad. Not the level: the gradient, and the forecast the prediction engine runs on the gradient. This is the same claim the music chapter already made in its one clean domain — musical feeling is the felt coherence-match and its resolution, tension the match held open, release the match struck — now stated generally: all feeling has that structure, because all feeling is that signal. It is also why pleasure is so poorly predicted by circumstances and so well predicted by their derivative — why the second week of the good news feels like nothing, and why relief, the mere removal of a mismatch, can feel better than possession ever did. The panel reports motion. Level with no motion reads as calm, not as joy.
Arousal is the energy mobilised at the boundaries. How much of the system is being driven off its resting detuning — coupling strengths pushed up, the vagal brake released, the sympathetic accelerator engaged, boundaries held at high \Delta v in readiness for a bind or a fight. Arousal is the boundary-energy throughput: the size of the bill currently being run, whatever its sign.
Two axes, two quantities: how the match is moving, and how much it is costing. Every named emotion in this chapter is a region of that plane plus one more piece of information the circumplex flattens out — which boundary is reporting.
And the body is the gauge face. James was right that the feeling arrives through the body, and Cannon was right that the viscera cannot individuate the emotions — both, because the body is where the readout is rendered, not where it is computed. The vagal chapter counted the wire: 100,000 fibres, four-fifths afferent, the brain bathed in a continuous upward report of the heart, the lungs, the gut. The interoceptive stream terminates in the anterior insula — Bud Craig’s “how do you feel?” cortex, the region whose activity tracks felt intensity across every emotion ever imaged there — and the framework reads that convergence as the panel’s display driver: the place the boundary economy’s telemetry is assembled into something the rest of the cortex can match against. Damasio’s somatic markers are entries on that display; alexithymia — feeling the arousal but unable to name the feeling — is the display running with the right-to-left channel to the narrative machinery degraded: a panel with the needles moving and the labels unreadable.
Three Gauges and a Body
Every coupling boundary in the section contributes a needle — the hippocampal circuit’s match, the sensory maps’ match, each has its felt trace. But three dominate the emotional landscape, and they dominate for structural reasons: one is the largest boundary in the brain, one is the fastest forecaster, and one is the regulator itself.
The seam: the bilateral pair. The two hemispheres are the brain’s biggest coupled pair, and the state of their coupling — the Kuramoto order parameter r the resonator ODE tracks — is a standing contributor to the felt state. Flow is the pair at the lock pole and it feels like what a struck match feels like: effortless, self-forgetting, intrinsically rewarding. The healthy resting cycle — leader exchange at the gap — feels like nothing at all, which is the matched boundary’s signature everywhere: \Delta v \to 0 stores nothing and reflects nothing. And the pole-pathologies of the pair are felt as moods: the slide arrested right-dominant reads out as the flat, approach-less weight of depression; the seam’s coupling disturbed reads out as the uncanny self-strangeness the schizophrenia literature documents. The bicameral match is not one emotion; it is a bias term under all of them — the register the rest of the panel is read in.
The alarm: the amygdala. The amygdala earns its reputation and outgrows it. Joseph LeDoux’s classic result is the anatomy of a forecaster: a fast, coarse subcortical road from the thalamus straight into the amygdala, arriving in a rat in some fifteen milliseconds — before the cortical decomposition has finished building the percept — beside a slower cortical road that arrives with the details. And the fast road’s diet is telling: the amygdala responds preferentially to the low-spatial-frequency content of a fearful face — the coarse blur, not the fine detail. In the section’s vocabulary that is exact: the amygdala reads only the bottom of the comb — the coarse rungs of the long vector, the first coordinates available — and runs the coherence-match at low resolution and maximum speed, asking one question: does this coarse shape complete to a stored threat? Its output is not a percept but a price: a direct line through the central nucleus to the hypothalamus and brainstem that mobilises the sympathetic gear — the predicted boundary-energy bill, \tfrac12\rho_\text{cr}(\Delta \hat v)^2, charged to the body in advance of the match being confirmed. That is why the alarm is fast and why it is wrong so often — a garden hose completes to a snake at coarse rungs — and why the modern literature has walked back “fear centre” to salience and relevance detector: the amygdala fires hardest not at certain threat but at ambiguity and unpredictability, the conditions under which the forecast term dominates the level. Patient S.M., her amygdalae calcified by Urbach–Wiethe disease, walks through haunted houses and handles snakes untouched by alarm: the panel’s fastest needle removed, the rest of the instrument intact. And the amygdala is paired — one per hemisphere, the alarm itself read bilaterally, with the right one biased toward exactly the coarse, fast, contextual road the right modon’s tiling predicts.
The self: the default-mode network. The previous chapter built this gauge in full: the DMN keeps the self-vector — the slowest, deepest, most heavily latched coordinates of the long vector — and regulates the whole boundary economy’s slide. Its contribution to the panel is the slowest needle: mood. Where an emotion is a reading, a mood is the standing state of the regulator — the basin the patrol is running in, colouring every faster reading taken while it holds. Rumination is that needle stuck: the self-vector match run compulsively, every incoming report matched first against the one stuck attractor. The DMN is arguably the primary driver in exactly the sense the question deserves: the seam and the alarm report on the present and the imminent; the DMN’s gauge reports on the deepest coordinate there is — how the self’s own match is doing — and it is the one gauge whose reading persists for weeks.
These three do not merely sit side by side; the brain wires them into a switching circuit the network literature has already mapped. Vinod Menon’s triple-network model — the DMN, the salience network built on the amygdala’s cortical partners (anterior insula and dorsal anterior cingulate), and the task-positive executive network, with the salience network acting as the switch that decides when the DMN yields — is, in this reading, the instrument panel’s own wiring diagram: the alarm gauge deciding, moment to moment, whether the boundary economy’s state warrants interrupting the self’s idle patrol and seizing the machinery of action. Psychopathology as aberrant triple-network dynamics — Menon’s own synthesis — is then the panel malfunctioning as a system: needles stuck, the switch mistimed, the display unreadable — the same four-way sort the regulator chapter ran, now seen from the gauges’ side.
So: a triad of drivers — the seam, the alarm, the self — rendered through a fourth structure, the vagal body, and read off a fifth, the insular display. The landscape below is what that panel can show.
The Landscape, Named
A named emotion, in this reading, is a region of the panel’s state space: which boundary is reporting, which of the three numbers dominates (level, gradient, forecast), which sign, and how much energy is mobilised. Barrett’s emotion concepts are the stored vectors the current panel-state is completed against — which is why the named landscape is culturally elaborated while the panel beneath it is universal, and why emotional granularity, the measured skill of feeling fine distinctions, behaves like a packing: people with many well-spread emotion concepts resolve their state finely, people with few collapsed ones feel only “bad,” and the skill is trainable, concept by concept, like any anti-lock repertoire.

A few of these deserve their prose. Contentment is the feeling of the stealth vacuum from the inside — the matched boundary’s signature, nothing has to be done about anything, which is why it is so hard to notice while it holds and so obvious once it breaks. Joy is pure gradient: coordinates arriving in register faster than expected, the same signal a cadence landing delivers in one channel, delivered in many. Anger is the interesting composite: a mismatch (negative level) plus a live forecast that the match can still be forced (positive expectancy) plus maximum mobilisation — the boundary economy declaring war on its own error term. Its arc follows the forecast exactly: while expectancy holds, anger; when expectancy dies with the mismatch still standing, the energy demobilises and anger decays into the sadness family — which is why helplessness is the hinge between rage and despair, and why restoring a sense of control is the fastest known solvent for both. Hope is anger’s gentle twin — a forecast of match gain held open against a present deficit, the leading tone of the emotional system, sustainable only while the expectancy term stays nonzero. And love, in its standing form, is what the trust chapter already built without naming: the pair channel’s slow coordinate wrapped to its lifetime, the matched boundary two people stop paying for — with limerence, love’s onset, as the gradient form: the steepest sustained match-rise the panel ever reports, and as unsustainable as any derivative.
The pair and the group get their own section below, because they are not two more entries — they are two more standing channels, each with its own full panel.
Anxiety: The Forecast of Match Loss
Anxiety is the landscape’s slipperiest region and its clearest substrate prediction, so it gets the full treatment.
The clinical literature has already made the load-bearing distinction: fear is phasic and referent-bound, anxiety is sustained and referent-free. Fear spikes at a present object and resolves with it; anxiety is the state of a system bracing for a loss it cannot localise. The anatomy honours the split — Michael Davis’s line of work dissociates the amygdala proper (phasic fear, a named threat) from the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, the “extended amygdala” that sustains the diffuse, long-timescale version — and the best modern synthesis, Grupe and Nitschke’s, defines anxiety outright as anticipatory: the pathology is in the response to uncertain future threat, not to threat itself. The single most reliable laboratory result in the field is that unpredictable shock produces more anxiety than predictable shock of the same intensity, and the transdiagnostic factor that best cuts across the anxiety disorders is intolerance of uncertainty.
The framework reads all of that as one sentence: anxiety is the panel’s forecast term run negative, with the referent slot empty — a predicted, unlocalised rise in \Delta v, system-wide. Not a mismatch: the derivative of a mismatch that has not happened yet, integrated across boundaries. This is the intuition of standing on ground you expect might shift, and the framework says the intuition is literally correct — the system is pricing a predicted loss of match everywhere at once, and mobilising for it (the arousal), without any boundary yet reporting the loss (no referent to act on). That is exactly why anxiety is worse than fear of the same magnitude: fear’s price buys action — the mobilisation discharges into the prediction-error loop and settles it — while anxiety’s price buys nothing, because a forecast with no referent gives the control loop nothing to close on. The energy is mobilised and cannot be spent. And it is why anxiety is the composite it feels like: the forecast integrates contributions from every gauge — the alarm’s coarse completion running hot, the seam’s coupling held off its resting gap, the self-vector’s own forecast (“will I still match?”), the body’s gears down-shifted — a weighted sum of predicted losses, which is why it presents so differently in different people depending on which term dominates their sum.
There is a pleasing symmetry here with the section’s cleanest chapter. Music is the coherence-match with the referent removed — pure match-feeling, pointed at nothing — and that referent-freedom is why it reaches so deep. Anxiety is the mismatch forecast with the referent removed: pure loss-feeling, pointed at nothing. They are the two referent-free signals the panel can carry, the bright twin and the dark one, and the dark one’s referent-freedom is exactly what makes it bottomless — there is no object whose removal would settle it. The treatments that work all work by giving the forecast a referent or retiring it: exposure writes new completions for the coarse alarm; cognitive reappraisal re-prices the forecast; the vagal brake, worked deliberately through the breath, demobilises the energy side of the loop so the forecast stops being confirmed by the body’s own alarm state. That last mechanism matters, because it names the trap: anxiety is self-confirming — the mobilisation it buys is itself a boundary-state the panel reads, a predicted loss producing the physiology of loss, the forecast feeding the state it forecasts. A panic attack is that positive-feedback loop run to rail. The loop-breakers all cut the same wire.
Sadness and Grief: The Ebb of a Deep Map
Sadness is the gradient of a decaying match, felt on a deep coordinate, with the energy demobilised — the system not fighting the loss (that is anger’s region) but conceding it. The demobilisation is the point: sadness is the panel’s signal that a coordinate is being let go, and its physiology — the parasympathetic weight, the slowing, the withdrawal, the tears — is the body dropping out of the mobilise gear so the expensive work of re-mapping can run. Sadness is not a malfunction of the boundary economy. It is the boundary economy doing maintenance it cannot do at speed.
Grief is that maintenance at its maximum, and it is the framework’s clearest case of the latch grammar felt from inside. A long relationship is the trust chapter’s deeply wrapped shared vector — a massive map, built over years, latched at every tier from the day’s routines to the self-vector’s own deep coordinates, which after enough time encode not just them but who I am with them in the world. Death, or ending, removes the referent and leaves the map. And the map still runs: every fragment — the mug, the song, the time of day — drops into the attractor and completes, and the completed vector reaches for a world-side match that is no longer there. Grief is the gradient felt at every completion: the match rung, and returned empty, again and again — a continual re-discovery of the loss at every rung the old map touches. The chemistry-side literature has arrived at almost exactly this reading on its own: Mary-Frances O’Connor’s work frames grief as the brain slowly updating an attachment map whose deepest prediction — they are here — was wrapped too deep to revise in one pass; and in prolonged grief, imaging shows reminders of the deceased still activating the reward circuitry — the attractor still completing, still paying out, the latch that will not open.
The framework’s addition is the structure of the ebb. A deep latch is not one wrap but a nesting — tiers of consolidation laid down at every timescale, daily habit over yearly rhythm over identity itself — and unwrapping it is therefore staged: each tier must be opened, its completions allowed to ring empty, its boundary adjusted, before the tier beneath becomes reachable. This is why grief is not a smooth decay but a punctuated one — plateaus while a tier holds, drops when it opens, ambushes when a fragment reaches a tier not yet touched — and why the phenomenology keeps returning to stages. The honest flags first: Kübler-Ross’s five stages were drawn from the dying, not the bereaved, and have not survived as a validated sequence; the better-supported pictures are Bowlby and Parkes’s phases and Stroebe and Schut’s dual-process model, in which the griever oscillates between loss-oriented and restoration-oriented work rather than marching through a fixed order. The framework prefers the oscillation reading on its own grounds — the ebb is the slide run on one deep coordinate, and the slide is never a march — but it keeps the kernel the stage intuition was pointing at: the adjustment is tiered because the latch is tiered, and each tier opened is a discrete structural event, whichever order a given griever’s dynamics visits them in. Read that way, the twelve-step architecture of recovery is the same object built as practice: a deliberately serialised walk down the nesting — admit the coordinate is broken, open the boundary, re-match against the group (the fellowship as a standing group channel, exactly the machinery two sections below), repair the pair-channels the addiction corrupted, re-wrap a new map tier by tier. The framework does not claim a one-to-one mapping of named steps to named tiers; it claims the shape — that recovery from any deeply latched map, chemical or personal, is a nested boundary adjustment and must run at the latch’s own timescale, which is why neither grief nor recovery can be rushed by insight alone. The wrap came in slowly; it goes out slowly; and the going-out is felt, continuously, as the gradient. That feeling is not incidental to the process. It is the process, read off the panel.
Awe and Ecstasy: The Opening and the Peak
Awe is the panel’s rarest positive reading: not a match struck on the standing vector but the vector discovering it is longer than it was. Keltner and Haidt’s definition — awe requires vastness plus need for accommodation — is the framework’s reading in psychology’s words: a signal spanning more rungs than the standing vector holds (the vastness), forcing the priors open to take it (the accommodation). The night sky, the canyon rim, the theorem that suddenly generalises, the birth: each delivers a coherent pattern that cannot be completed at the current comb and is coherent enough to be worth extending the comb for. Dormant coordinates — rungs the daily vector never rings — are rung; the felt “opening” is exactly that awakening. And the measured signature agrees with the mechanism: awe reliably reduces default-mode-network activity — the “small self” of the awe literature is the self-vector’s grip loosening while the expansion runs — a brief, gentle, earned version of the regulator stepping back, with none of the disassembly. Awe feels like clarity because it is clarity: new coordinates, cleanly matched, at low mismatch cost — the one emotion whose report is the instrument itself just got bigger.
Ecstasy is the strong form, and the framework reads it with the DMN chapter’s machinery in hand. Every hour of ordinary binding leaves the ledger the regulator pays down at rest — boundaries held off their matched limit, stored \tfrac12\rho_\text{cr}(\Delta v)^2 accumulating across the system. The ecstatic state is that ledger paid down at once: a system-wide relaxation of held boundaries toward match, run as the peak oscillating exchange the contemplative literature describes — coherence rising and releasing in waves as tier after tier lets go. The clearing of boundary layers feels good for the most literal reason the framework can offer: stored boundary energy is being released, everywhere, simultaneously — the same signal as a cadence landing or a trusted embrace, at the largest scale the panel can report. And the DMN limits access to it for the reason the regulator chapter gave: the separations it maintains are load-bearing — a system that cleared all its boundaries on demand would be a system that could not keep its meanings, its memories, or its self apart. So the state must be earned or desperate. Earned: the contemplative path, the regulator trained until the deep anti-lock excursion can be run deliberately and reversibly — the jhāna states whose imaging now shows exactly the deep, graded, self-vector-quieting reorganisation this reading expects. Desperate: the regulator failing — the near-death surge of organised gamma coherence measured in dying brains, the terminal unbinding as the governor loses its grip on a system it can no longer afford to hold apart. And chemically forced: the psychedelic disassembly, the regulator switched off while the plant still runs. Three doors, one room — and the room’s feeling, the oceanic release the reports agree on, is the boundary economy’s entire stored ledger, cashed. The framework’s ordering claim is that these sit on one measurable axis: awe, the trained ecstatic state, and the psychedelic state as graded degrees of the same DMN release and re-matching, from a gentle loosening to a full disassembly.
Am I Whole, Am I In: The Pair and the Group
Two channels deserve their own gauges because the mind demonstrably runs them as standing models, not occasional computations. The section built both: the pair channel — two minds as coupled modons, the conversation as bilateral coupling lifted across the air, trust as the channel’s matched limit — and, one rung sparser, the group: many minds coupled through shared packets and shared deep agreements. The emotional claim is that both channels are always on. The brain does not open a pair model when a partner appears and close it after; it maintains a running pair-completion — a standing set of coordinates whose job is to be completed by someone — and a running group-match — a standing model of the group’s model of you, held against your own display. Two of the oldest questions the organism asks are the standing states of those two channels: am I whole (does the pair channel complete?) and am I in (does the group’s model of me match my display?).
The social emotions are those channels’ panel readings. Loneliness is the pair channel open, ringing, and uncompleted — and the Cacioppo research programme documented exactly the profile this predicts: loneliness is not the absence of company but the absence of completion (crowds do not touch it; one matched channel does), it behaves like a hunger (an ancient, insistent, mobilising deficit signal, not a preference), and chronically it is as damaging as smoking — because a standing channel held unmatched is a boundary held at high \Delta v, indefinitely, and the ledger runs. The completeness Jeff’s framing points at is real and broader than romance: the pair-completion coordinate can be matched by a partner, a deep friendship, a collaborator, a God held as a live interlocutor — what the channel requires is not a category of person but a matched completion at the slow rung. Shame is the group gauge’s alarm: the forecast of expulsion — the group’s inferred model of you mismatching your display, with the mismatch about to be read. Its physiology is the freeze gear, the body making itself small, display suppressed — boundary-minimising behaviour, exactly what a system forecasting a group-side match collapse should do. Guilt is the pair-scale sibling with the referent named: a specific forged or broken coordinate in a specific channel, which is why guilt, unlike shame, comes with an action tendency — the coordinate can be repaired, and the feeling is the unclosed loop demanding it. Pride and belonging are the same two gauges reading positive: the group’s model of you matching your display at a coordinate the group prizes; the group channel completing without verification, trust’s plural form. The reason social pain is pain — the same anterior insula and cingulate machinery that prices physical damage, Eisenberger’s result — is on this reading no metaphor: the pair and group channels are boundaries in the same economy as every other, and their mismatches are priced in the same currency, on the same display.
The Control Loop: Emotion as Forcing
Everything above reads the panel; this section closes the loop, because a panel that changed nothing would not have been built.
The section’s engine already has the socket. The resonator ODE drives the cortical stack with a forcing vector \vec F(t) and steers it with the slow parameter vectors — the couplings \vec K(t), the coherence-qualities \vec\mu(t). Emotion is the feedback law that sets those parameters from the panel’s readings. Each major gauge runs its own predict-measure-correct cycle on its own match: the seam’s loop predicts the pair’s future r and modulates K toward the pole the task demands; the alarm’s loop forecasts \Delta v and pre-pays the mobilisation; the self’s loop forecasts the self-vector’s completability and sets the mood-basin the others run in; the body’s loop closes the slowest circuit through the gears. The prediction engine, in other words, is not only pointed at the world. It is pointed at itself — the engine predicts its own coherence and acts to control that prediction, a second-order loop wrapped around the first-order one, which is the precise sense in which the mind is a control freak: what it ultimately regulates is not the world but its own match with the world.
The force law of that loop already has a name in this book, and a family connection. Victor Vroom’s expectancy theory — motivational force as the product F = E \times I \times V of expectancy, instrumentality, and valence — entered the framework in the language chapter as the factorisation of the drive down a conversation’s rungs. Here it generalises to the whole panel: it is the gain schedule of the emotional control loop. Expectancy is the forecast term — can the match be moved at all; instrumentality is the loop’s model of its own control path — does moving this coordinate move the one that matters; valence is the panel’s own reading — how much match, on how deep a coordinate, is at stake. The product structure is the part the framework underlines: any factor at zero kills the force, which is the single law under three different collapses the landscape already met — anger dying into despair when expectancy hits zero, hope’s dependence on a live path, and the flat, force-less weight of depression, which the regulator chapter read as the DMN stuck and this section can now read equivalently as the gain schedule zeroed: learned helplessness is expectancy held at zero by experience, and every needle on the panel can be moving while the product, and therefore the motion, stays null.
Two dynamical notes complete the loop. First, the reinforcing spirals: because the panel’s readings are themselves states the panel reads, every gauge supports positive feedback — the anxiety loop above, rumination as the self-gauge feeding on its own reading, rage feeding on the mobilisation it bought — and the pathologies of emotion are overwhelmingly loop pathologies, not signal pathologies: the feeling is accurate; the feedback is unstable. Every effective regulation technique in the clinical repertoire is a loop-breaker at a nameable point: reappraisal edits the forecast, exposure rewrites the alarm’s completions, behavioural activation forces nonzero expectancy, the breath demobilises the body term, and the DMN’s own reset re-anneals the basin the whole loop runs in. Second, the timescale hierarchy is load-bearing: the panel’s needles run at the ladder’s own rungs — the alarm in milliseconds, feeling in seconds, mood in days, temperament in years, each level the slow controller of the level below — so “emotional” and “rational” are not two systems in the old opposition but two rungs of one control stack, the fast loops supplying the priced state the slow loops deliberate over. Damasio’s patients, ventromedial damage severing the panel from the deliberator, choose worse, not better, with the feelings gone: a controller cut off from its instruments is not objective. It is blind.
Predictions and What Would Falsify
Five predictions extend the panel reading beyond its structural anchors. Each names existing instruments and, mostly, existing data.
Valence tracks the gradient and forecast of measurable coherence, not its level. In simultaneous experience-sampling and physiology (EEG coherence, DMN-configuration, HRV state), momentary valence ratings should correlate with the time-derivative and model-estimated forecast of coherence measures more strongly than with their absolute level — with contentment the predicted exception (high level, near-zero derivative) that dissociates the two. The music chapter’s expectation results (Meyer, Huron, Salimpoor–Zatorre) already show this in one channel; the claim is that it generalises to affect at large. A valence signal that tracks level with no derivative or forecast term breaks the panel reading at its centre.
Fear and anxiety dissociate as level versus forecast, and the alarm reads the coarse rungs. Phasic amygdala response should scale with present mismatch on a named referent; sustained BNST and anticipatory insula response with predicted loss and its uncertainty (the NPU threat paradigms provide the platform, and largely already show the split). The coarse-rung claim adds a sharper edge: the fast alarm’s low-spatial-frequency bias in vision should generalise across modalities — the subcortical road driven by the bottom of each sensory comb (coarse pitch contour, coarse temporal envelope) with the fine rungs arriving only by the cortical road.
Grief runs at latch depth and is punctuated, not smooth. Grief trajectories (experience-sampling over months) should be stage-like in the structural sense — plateaus and discrete drops, oscillating per Stroebe–Schut, rather than a smooth exponential — and the overall timescale should scale with measures of the map’s wrapping depth (relationship duration, cohabitation density, identity overlap) beyond loss severity ratings. Prolonged grief should show the signature of a latch that will not open: reward-circuit response to reminders persisting (O’Connor’s result), with recovery tracking its decay.
Awe, trained ecstatic states, and psychedelics order on one DMN-release axis. All three should show DMN integrity reduction with preserved-or-raised global coherence, dose-ordered (awe least, psychedelics most), with self-report of self-loss tracking deep-coordinate quieting across all three; awe specifically should additionally show new coupling into previously quiet regions — expansion, not only release. The awe-DMN, jhāna, and psychedelic imaging literatures each exist; the ordering claim just requires reading them on one axis.
Emotional granularity is a packing, and the display is the bottleneck. Individual granularity (differentiation indices from experience sampling) should correlate with interoceptive precision (heartbeat-detection or better modern probes) and with the measured angular spread of emotion-concept representations (representational-similarity analysis over affect-labelling tasks); alexithymia should present as the collapsed-packing plus degraded-display combination — reduced concept spread and reduced right-to-left interhemispheric transfer, per the bilateral chapter’s channel reading.
The picture is falsified if (a) momentary valence tracks coherence level with no derivative or forecast contribution, (b) fear and anxiety fail to dissociate as phasic-present versus sustained-forecast, or the fast alarm shows no coarse-rung bias outside vision, (c) grief decays smoothly, independent of consolidation-depth measures, with no punctuated structure, (d) awe, contemplative peak states, and psychedelics fail to order on a common DMN-release axis or awe shows no DMN change at all, or (e) granularity is uncorrelated with both interoceptive precision and concept-spread. It is supported, even partially, if any of the five hold — and most can be run on data already collected.
Honest Assessment
The empirical spine belongs to affective science: the circumplex and core affect, the James–Lange/Cannon debate and its modern resolution in interoceptive-inference terms, LeDoux’s two roads and the amygdala’s ambiguity-sensitivity, the S.M. case, the fear/anxiety–amygdala/BNST dissociation, Grupe–Nitschke’s anticipatory synthesis, the unpredictable-shock and intolerance-of-uncertainty results, Craig’s insular interoception, Damasio’s somatic markers and ventromedial patients, Menon’s triple-network model, the awe-DMN findings, O’Connor’s grief-as-map-updating and the prolonged-grief reward signature, Stroebe–Schut oscillation, Cacioppo’s loneliness programme, Eisenberger’s social-pain overlap, Barrett’s constructed emotion and the granularity literature. What the framework adds is one interpretive move — emotion is the felt readout of the coherence-match economy: level, gradient, and forecast, per boundary, with valence and arousal as the economy’s two native axes — and that move should be judged the way the section judges everything: by whether it makes the disparate findings one picture, and by whether its predictions bite. It does unify — the two-dimensional structure of affect, the fear/anxiety split, the punctuated shape of grief, the awe-to-ecstasy family, the social emotions, and the loop pathologies all fall out of a single reading — and predictions 1–3 in particular are specific and runnable.
What is not solid is flagged where it stands: Kübler-Ross held as phenomenology rather than sequence, the twelve-step mapping claimed as shape rather than step-for-step correspondence, the near-death reading resting on the measured gamma surge rather than on any molecule, and the whole chapter’s altitude declared at the door — this is the section’s most interpretive tier, the reading of felt experience against a physics, and it can be wrong in ways its neighbours cannot. What it refuses, on the section’s own discipline: no claim that any emotional state is a perception of the substrate, and no promotion of the panel to a homunculus — the gauges are read by nothing but the loops they steer.
Putting the Section in Context
Emotion is the felt telemetry of the coherence-match economy. Every coupled boundary the section has built — the bilateral seam, the amygdala’s fast coarse-rung alarm, the DMN’s self-vector, the vagal body, the pair and group channels — reports three numbers: the level of its match, the gradient of its match, and the forecast its loop runs on both. Valence and arousal, the two axes affective science keeps recovering, are the economy’s two native quantities — how the match is moving, and how much boundary energy is mobilised — and the named emotions are regions of that state space, completed against stored emotion-vectors the way every percept is completed against its priors. The landscape sorts by the numbers: contentment the matched limit held, joy the gradient, hope and anxiety the two signs of the forecast (anxiety the referent-free dark twin of music’s referent-free match), anger the blocked match with live expectancy, sadness and grief the ebb — the staged unwrapping of a deeply latched map, felt as gradient at every tier — awe the comb extended, ecstasy the ledger paid at once through the earned, desperate, or chemical release of the regulator, and the social emotions the standing readings of the two questions the organism never stops asking: am I whole, am I in. Emotion then closes the loop as the control law the resonator ODE was missing — the feedback that sets \vec K(t) and \vec F(t) from the panel, with Vroom’s expectancy product as its gain schedule, its pathologies loop-instabilities rather than signal errors, and its rungs running from the alarm’s milliseconds to temperament’s years as one control stack.
What this chapter adds to the framework is the answer to the question the section’s punchline begged. The section has said throughout that health is the capacity to slide between the poles, and the previous chapter named the machinery that runs the slide. This chapter names how the slide feels — and why it feels at all. A boundary economy this large needs telemetry; the telemetry, rendered through a body and read off an insular display, is what it is like to be the economy. The feelings are not decoration on the machine, and not the ghost in it: they are the machine’s own running report on the state of its matches — which is why they are the most compelling thing in experience, and why every chapter of this section, from the flow of the pair to the ache of the unresolved chord to the weight of a broken trust, has been describing an emotion without saying so. The chapters that follow carry the object outward — into language, which passes the panel’s readings between minds one word-packet at a time; into trust, the pair channel’s matched limit; into the market, where a million panels couple and the composite gauge is called sentiment. The long vector carries the state; the coherence-match moves it; and the moving, felt from inside, is the emotional life.
